Introduction

The University of California's Policies Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations and Students (PACAOS) sets forth the policies concerning student life. The PACAOS address the rights and responsibilities of the University community and others while on University Property, as well as the shared responsibility between students, staff, and faculty in sustaining the community. The UC Office of the President publishes the PACAOS and makes them available for review on their website.

Each UC campus may adopt campus implementing regulations consistent with the PACAOS. At UC San Diego, the various PACAOS sections have been implemented through the Policy & Procedure Manual (PPM). The PPM, along with the Academic and Staff Personnel Manuals, serve as the primary reference guide for UC San Diego campus operating policies and procedures which apply to academic, administrative, research, and service units.

The policies connect the campus' mission to the everyday actions of its community, clarify the institutions expectations of its individual members, mitigate institutional risk, enhance efficiency, and support the university's compliance with laws and regulations. All PPM's are available at Geisel Library, and copies of specific PPM's may be requested from Policy & Records Administration.

Information for Student Respondents:

In fulfilling the recommendation(s) set forth by President Napolitano's Task Force on Sexual Violence and Sexual Assault, the Center for Student Accountability, Growth, and Education (SAGE) is the umbrella office for support services for students, particularly Respondents, who are involved with pending investigations and adjudications of sexual violence and sexual harassment (SVSH) cases. After a Respondent receives a Notice of Investigation for a possible SVSH violation, SAGE will connect them with a Respondent Support Advisor to provide assistance and support as they go through the process.

A Respondent Support Advisor can help Respondents understand their rights and responsibilities; explain and help them navigate the investigation and adjudication processes; provide accompaniments to investigation, adjudication, appeal and other meetings (if wanted); make referrals to campus and community resources for counseling, legal services, alternative housing, course changes and other needs; and assist with securing an interpreter or translator (if needed). Respondent Support Advisors receive training on relevant policies and processes, essential campus resources and their roles in helping students through the process.

It is important to note that the staff providing respondent services are not legally required to maintain confidentiality. However, as a general practice, the staff will request signed consent from you before disclosing personally identifiable information.

One of the following UC San Diego staff members will be assigned by SAGE to serve as a student’s Respondent Support Advisor:

  • Nic Alonzo — Assistant Director, Campus Events
  • Cesar Figueroa — Assistant Director of Residence Life, Warren College
  • Brendan Mahoney — Fund Manager, Student Life Business Office

For more information about Respondent Support Advisors, please contact the Center for Student Accountability, Growth, and Education at (858) 534-6225 or sage@ucsd.edu.
